What Is a Swan?

Swans: They are among the biggest flying birds and also the largest type of waterfowl. They are called swans. The mute swan, trumpeter swan and whooper swan, are some of the largest living species. They can reach a length of over 60 inches and weigh over 34 lbs. Their wingspans can exceed 10 feet. While they bear no other marks that are visible at any distance, geese are very different in size from them. This includes their feet, which, being larger in proportion to their bodies, are not tawny but reddish-yellow with dull bluish-gray on the sides. In addition to this patch, they also have a small amount of regular skin on top of their heads between their eyes and bills. It is believed that it is a natural fly trap where flies may easily get stuck unless chased away or brushed off by either parent’s beak or feathers themselves. The female’s eggs are hatched around April when temperatures start rising again slowly following colder winter days, gradually heating up into summer. The swan with the greatest size is known from fossils found on the Mediterranean islands of Malta and Sicily. They were called the extinct Cygnus falconeri which was a giant flightless swan. It is believed to have died out because of over-hunting for food, changes in weather conditions and the arrival of predators or competitors for their food source. Love My Swans!
