What is a Mountain?

A mountain is one of the most impressive natural phenomenon on the earth. A good example is the Rocky Mountains. It’s typically defined as a land form that rises high above its surroundings with an often steep slope and a summit. Mountains are generally formed by the movement of tectonic plates, which causes portions of the Earth’s crust to push up and form peaks and ridges. From snow capped peaks to rocky ridges, mountains can have all sorts of different characteristics. They can also be composite, meaning their cores can be made up of different materials and various heights. Generally, a mountain is considered any land form that’s higher than 1000 feet. Not only are mountains a breathtaking sight, but they also play a major role in many climates and environments around the world. Mountains create interesting weather systems and are home to multiple different plant and animal species. We may not always be mountain climbers, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still appreciate the beauty of these massive land forms.
