What Are Eyes?
The eyes are remarkable sensory organs that are utilized for vision. The human eye contains several components, including the cornea, iris, pupil, lens, vitreous and retina. The cornea is the transparent, front structure that covers the front of the eye and it serves as the window to the eye. The iris is the colored part of the eye that helps to regulate the light that enters the eye. The pupil, a dark round spot in the center of the eye, is just the opening in the center of the iris and it adjusts the amount of light that enters the eye. The lens of the eye is a clear disk that is found behind the iris and it focuses light rays on the back of the eye, called the retina. The vitreous is the jelly like substance that fills the part of the eye behind the lens and helps the eye to maintain spherical shape. The retina lines the back of the eye and it contains millions of photo receptors, which capture light and send impulses to the brain to create a visual image.
