What is Celery?
Celery is an important vegetable grown and consumed all over the world. It is in the family of Apiaceaeand often referred to as a type of ‘umbelliferous vegetable’, meaning it fruits in an umbrella-like structure. Each celery plant branching out from a single stem and with many small flowers. Celery grows best in full sun and a temperature of around 77 degrees Fahrenheit. It needs consistently moist soil and regular feeding in order to stay healthy. Harvesting follows in 3 to 4 months after planting and some methods may require a mild cool temperature in order to maintain the all-important crunchy texture. In food, it is used both raw and cooked for its distinct flavor and texture, often used as a garnish or as a main ingredient in salads. It is also used as an ingredient in soups and stews, especially noodle soups. Apart from its culinary uses, celery is full of nutritional compounds that are beneficial for the body and certain organic compounds found in celery are known to reduce inflammation, cholesterol levels and even lower blood pressure.
