What is a Notary?

A Notary is an individual who is licensed to witness the signing of important documents and administer oaths. They are responsible for verifying the identities of parties signing documents, ensuring that all parties to a transaction have entered into it willingly and without coercion. They are attesting to the facts stated in the documents. The signature and stamp of the Notary Public are usually required for certain transactions such as wills, deeds, loan documents and certain contracts. Most Notaries require the person needing the services to present valid identification such as a driver’s license, passport or other government issued ID. They must also take an oath before the Notary that the details provided in the document are true and correct. Notaries also must keep detailed records of each transaction. The duties and functions of a Notary can vary from state to state. For example, in some states, Notaries may certify copies of original documents, but in other states, that authority is restricted to public officials such as a judge or court clerk. Before signing any important document, it is important to consult with an experienced Notary who can help ensure that all aspects of the transaction are properly handled.
