What Is A Javelin?
The Javelin is a lightweight spear initially designed as a ranged weapon. Today, it is usually deployed as a sporting tool, particularly during the Javelin Throw event in Sporting Events. It is thrown manually, in contrast to projectile-launching devices such as the sling, bow and crossbow, which require mechanical aid. However, specific tools such as spear-throwers and the amentum can enhance the javelin thrower’s performance. It contributes to a longer range throw. Javelins are the weapon of choice for javelineers – warriors or soldiers armed with one or more spears. The word “javelin” has Middle English origins, being derived from Old French javelin, a diminutive of the word javelot, which stands for spear. It is thought to originate from one of the Celtic languages.
