What Is A Cathedral?

Cathedrals are a big deal in the Christian world! They serve as the central church of a diocese, conference or episcopate and contain the cathedra of a bishop. We’ve seen cathedrals being built as early as the 4th century in Italy, Gaul, Spain and North Africa, but they didn’t become a staple of the Western Catholic Church until the 12th century. Not only were they given distinct architectural forms, but they also had their own institutional structures and legal identities that set them apart from parish churches, monastic churches and episcopal residences. Ultimately, the cathedral is the most important church in a bishop’s area of authority – it’s from the cathedral that the bishop governs the masses.
