What Is Toilet Paper?
Toilet paper is one of those everyday items that we almost take for granted, but it has a surprisingly long and interesting history. People have used cloth, sponges and even corncobs for centuries to wipe themselves after using the restroom. Toilet paper didn’t make its debut until 1857. That’s when New York inventor Joseph C. Gayetty was credited with creating the first commercial toilet paper, which was sold in bundles of flat sheets, each printed with his name. It didn’t look much like the soft, quilted, two-ply rolls of toilet paper we know today, rather more like a towel or tissue paper. While it failed to catch on, Gayetty’s commercial introduction of a product for use in the bathroom gave other inventors the spark of redemption to refine and improve upon the concept. It wasn’t until 1871 that the modern toilet paper roll was invented and it quickly became the preferred method of wiping for generations to come. Now, it seems almost unthinkable to live without the convenient, yet often times amusing, toilet paper!
