What Are Lips?
Lips are the major part of the facial anatomy that are composed of several layers of tissue. Located at the entrance of the mouth, lips serve different functions including speaking, eating, drinking and expressing emotions. They are composed mainly of the following structures: the vermilion, the mucous membrane, the Orbicularis oris muscle and the glands of the labial region. The vermilion refers to the red, sensitive and most visible part of the lips, located where the mouth meets the skin. It is protected by a thin layer of skin and contains a lot of blood vessels which gives them their distinct red color. The mucous membrane is located where the two lips meet in the middle. It is an area of thin skin that is moist and it helps to keep the lips lubricated. The Orbicularis oris muscle is a circular muscle located in the center of the lips. This muscle is responsible for the movement of the lips, allowing the person to form different syllables and expressions. The glands of the labial region are located at the corners of the mouth. They produce sweat and sebum which keeps the lips moisturized and protect it from getting dry or cracked. Lips play an important role in communication, as we use them to convey different emotions and to form words for speech. They are also important when it comes to facial expressions, as different areas of the lips can be moved to make different expressions. Lips also play a role in our appearance, as many people use lipsticks and other cosmetics to give their lips more color and definition.
