What Is a Jellyfish?
Jellyfish, also known as jellies, are a type of aquatic invertebrates belonging to the taxonomic class of Cnidaria. You will find that at the ocean and there are also freshwater and brackish waters also. They can range in size from microscopic to several feet in diameter depending on the species. The most distinguishing feature of jellyfish are their tentacles, which contain specialized cells, known as cnidocytes, that are used to capture prey and defend against predators. These cnidocytes also emit toxins, which, when in contact with a predator’s skin, can cause mild to severe pain and burning sensations. In addition to their cnidocytes, jellyfish have a communal digestive system, a central nervous system, and a system for movement. These features together make jellyfish an ancient yet versatile species.
