What Is a Jail?
A jail is a secure facility managed by law enforcement officers that houses inmates who have been convicted of crimes or who have not yet appeared in court to determine guilt. While the terms “jail and prison” are often used interchangeably, they are two different types of facilities. Prisons are generally run by government entities and provide higher security for inmates who are awaiting trial or who have been sentenced for multiple years or life sentences. Jails, on the other hand, are most often operated at the local or municipal level and hold inmates for shorter jail sentences and who are pending trial. Typically, jails are physically smaller and less secure than prisons and are used to house inmates before being sentenced or committed to a longer-term facility.
