This is when the device became infamous for its use in mass executions. The concept of a more humane method of execution was developed by Dr. Joseph Ignace Guillotin, who advocated the use of a machine that would make executions more reliable and less painful, in keeping with Enlightenment ideals of human rights. The guillotine was officially introduced to France in 1792 as a tool for executing by beheadings. During the French Revolution, the guillotine became synonymous with the Reign of Terror and became a horrific symbol of a brutal period of mass executions. Thousands of people, including King Louis XVI. and Marie Antoinette met her fate on the guillotine, underscoring their widespread and indiscriminate use as tools of state-sanctioned violence. Although the guillotine was originally intended to promote a more humane form of execution, it eventually became a stark reminder of the violence and tumult of the French Revolution, cementing it in history as a symbol of justice and terror.
