The original names of the week are of Roman origin. Latin was the primary language of the Romans. They named the days of the week after the seven known planets at that time in history. They were named after their Roman gods: Sol, Luna, Mars, Mercury, Jove (Jupiter), Venus and Saturn. The Romans were influenced by the Greeks after they were conquered by the Romans. The main reason the Romans were such an influence on society because they conquered the majority of the Western World over a 1000 year period.
