What Is An Ear?
Ear: The organ that is responsible for the sense of hearing and body balance in mammals is known as the ear. This complex organ is typically divided into three parts: the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. The outer ear comprises the visible pinna and the ear canal. In most cases, when we refer to the “ear,” we are specifically referring to this external part. The middle ear consists of the tympanic cavity and three ossicles. The inner ear is located within the bony labyrinth and contains structures crucial for various senses. These include the semicircular canals, which aid in balance and eye tracking during movement; the utricle and saccule, which contribute to balance while stationary; and the cochlea, which is essential for hearing. To maintain cleanliness, the ear canal is naturally cleared by earwax, which migrates towards the visible part of the ear. Vertebrates typically have ears positioned symmetrically on both sides of the head, facilitating the localization of sound.
