What Is A Ship?
Ships or vessels of all sizes have been traversing the world’s oceans and other waterways for centuries. They have been transporting cargo, passengers and vessels used for specialized purposes such as war, research, fishing, exploration and colonization. Ship transport is an integral part of global commerce and over time new technologies and trends have enabled an expansive variety of ships around the world. As of 2023, over 50,000 merchant ships were in operation – totaling 1.9 billion tons – with oil tankers comprising 32%, bulk carriers making up 46%, and container ships making up 14%. Historians believe ships have been in use since the 4th millennium BC, during the time of Ancient Egypt. There are also others who believe that ships have been around since approximately 20,000 BC.
