What Is Ice?
Ice – it’s water in a solidified state, usually below 32°F (nearer to 0°C). Depending on the amount of impurities like dirt or air, it can look totally transparent or a hazy white color. We see it all over the Solar System; beyond that, it appears as interstellar ice. On Earth, it’s found mainly in the polar regions and in mountains like glaciers or sheets. Ice has eighteen phases depending on temp and pressure, when it’s cooled rapidly it can form three types of amorphous ice. And if you cool it super slowly, it gets super chilly and creates macroscopic quantum stuff! On our home planet, most ice is hexagonal crystalline , with a few cubic ice found too – and even some newer Ice VII inclusions in diamonds. All this depends on temperature and pressure, and how it transitions from water to vapor forms frost and snowflakes. We use ice in cooling, for fun activities like ice skating, ice-sculpting or other winter sports.
