What Is A Cemetery?
A cemetery, burial ground, grave site or graveyard is a place where the remains of our dearly departed are laid to rest. The word comes from the Greek ‘koimētērion’ meaning ‘sleeping place’ and was originally used to describe the Roman catacombs. The term graveyard is often used interchangeably with cemetery, but it usually refers to a burial ground within a churchyard. At a cemetery, bodies may be buried in a grave or interred in a tomb, mausoleum, columbarium, niche, or other structure. In many cultures, funerals are held in cemeteries. These ceremonies and religious customs vary greatly from country to country. Modern cemeteries often contain crematoria as well, and some that were originally used for both now serve primarily as crematoria.
