What Is a Turkey?
The wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) and the ocellated turkey (Meleagris ocellata) are both members of the same genus Meleagris, native to North America. Male turkeys are distinguished by the fleshy, pendulous structure of the snood which is located at the top of their beaks. These birds are some of the largest species of their range, with the male invariably larger and more colorful than its female counterpart. Domestication of the wild turkey began by the Native American Indians in North America and later reached Eurasia through the Columbian Exchange. The term “turkey” is believed to have originated from the country Turkey where the domesticated variety was first imported to Great Britain.
