What is a Schooner?

Schooner: It is a sailing ship with at a minimum of two masts. Most have three masts that increases the speed across the water. The foremast is usually slightly shorter than the first or main mast. Although schooners can sometimes have more than two masts, most schooners contain only two due to the cost factor. The size of the caravan allows for easy sailing into the wind, resulting in a comfortable and efficient sailing experience. There are not many of them left being sailed any more. There is one that is called the Liberty that is used for sailing vacations and parties.  The schooner rigging is used in vessels with a wide range of purposes. On a fast hull, it has the ability to catch the windward side of the sail. They have  been used in the past as Pirate ships, Privateers and Slave Ships. During the Civil War they were used as Blockade Runners to go to England and Cuba to pickup supplies for the North and South sides of the Union. Some were used to smuggle opium in the early 1700’s thru the 1800’s due to their speed on the water. Love My Schooner!
