What Is A Scribe?

Scribe is a term that refers to a person who makes written copies of documents or cuneiforms. Before the invention of printing, diligent scribes in villages or city states made copies of all legal documents. A scribe’s job may include copying manuscripts and other texts, as well as secretarial and administrative tasks such as dictation and keeping commercial, judicial, and historical records for kings, nobles, temples and cities. The profession of scribe first appears in early Mesopotamia. Scribes helped preserve ancient and medieval cultures, including Egypt, Persia, Greek, Roman Empire and Medieval Europe.
