What Are Lice?
Lice, also known as pediculosis, are parasitic insects that attach themselves to the scalp of mammals, including humans. They feed on dead skin cells and sebum, resulting in redness, itchiness and skin irritation. While there are many species of lice, the most common are head lice. Head lice are oval, tan insects that live close to the scalp, attaching themselves to individual hairs. They have three pairs of legs and are 5-8 mm in length. Head lice lay eggs that attach firmly to the hair shafts. Once hatched, they mature in 7-10 days and then live for approximately 30 days. Lice can be contracted through contact with an infested person, or by sharing headgear, clothing, beds and combs. Symptoms of lice may include itching, sores on the scalp, irritability, and a tickling sensation.
