What is a Water Buffalo?
A water buffalo is an incredible animal and it has multiple uses! Water buffaloes are large, hoofed mammals that are related to cows and are found in the marshy areas of Asia, Africa and the Mediterranean. They are often referred to as “the living tractor” due to their ability to plow, haul and transport goods across water and on land. Water buffalo’s are also used for their milk, which is higher in fat and protein content than cow’s milk and their hides and skin is used for items such as shoes and purses. Water buffaloes are gentle creatures with lots of character and despite their size they are incredibly protective and will fiercely protect their herd when threatened. They are fascinating animals and have been adapted to live in a wide variety of habitats, making them one of the most resilient and robust creatures in the world. They are being studied to learn new things about these majestic animals and they’re certainly worth celebrating!
