What Is Lightening?

Lightening is a natural phenomenon associated with rain and thunderstorms. It consists of a flash of visible light produced by a rapid electrical discharge within an atmosphere that results in a loud crashing sound of thunder. Lightning is produced when positively charged ions in the clouds collide with negatively charged ions within the atmosphere. This collision releases a large amount of energy into the atmosphere in the form of light and sound. Lightning is an incredibly powerful phenomenon, which is immediately followed by a loud sound of thunder. It is estimated that lightning strikes the Earth’s surface around eight million times a day. Its unpredictable nature can cause serious harm, which is why it is important to practice proper safety precautions during thunderstorms. Not a good time to go golfing. Although lightning can cause harm, it has a captivating beauty, inspiring artists and creating breathtaking moments as it illuminates the night’s sky.
