What Is Lettuce?
Lettuce was originally farmed by the ancient Egyptians. It quickly gained recognition as a valuable food source due to its succulent leaves and oil-rich seeds. Its original name was lactuca, it was assigned by the Romans in the first century AD and is where the English word “lettuce” is derived. Over the subsequent centuries, multiple varieties were developed in Europe, eventually leading to the creation of the lettuce plantings still used in modern gardens. As a hardy annual, lettuce is easily cultivated, though it should be grown in a low temperature area to prevent premature flowering. Today, it is part of the main food group choice to eat healthy.
