What Is A Telephone?
The telephone is a communication device allowing two or more individuals to converse from a distance. It does so by converting sound – typically the human voice – into electronic information that is transmitted via cables or other channels, and then converted back to sound for the receiving user. Derived from Greek for ‘distant voice’, the telephone has been of immense value in business, government, and everyday life since Alexander Graham Bell received the first US patent for a device which could faithfully reproduce human speech at another handset in 1876. A typical telephone comprises two components; a microphone (transmitter) to speak into, and an earphone (receiver) to listen with. The transmitter converts sound waves into electrical signals, which are then sent via telecommunication systems to the receiver. Here, the signals are converted back into sound – both in the earphone and sometimes a loudspeaker. Telephones can even allow two-way transmission simultaneously.
